The fact that a same fixed number (250k) of immigrants are given visa every year no matter recession or not is clear indicator that Canadian immigration is not about skill shortage or giving job and prosperity to immigrants, it is all about a check on declining population and to give care to aging Canadians. In the mission some lose some gains, after all to put up an application and relocate is person's own choice. Not animals (except a Panda or two), not aliens..only humans from other lands they need. Any other solution this country have ? ...nada.

Any statistics for the above statement?
I know a number of friends who have prospered greatly post 2000, but I would want to see an objective reply before I take the plunge.

No TK, I don't have any statistics unfortunately. However, I have a few friends and acquintances that moved there and didn't have to undergo EVEN initial struggles. And, not all of them are in IT and Finance if you want me to stress this as well.
Research and research it well before you take a plunge. Why not a visit the place and/or if possible try to secure an employment beforehand?
I must re-emphasis that Canada needs immigration according to the skills in demand, employability factors, current unemployment rates, a high English language proficiency, etc. This has to be in tandem with what Corporate Canada wants, as it is widely seen that Govt's immigration and approvals are not in co-ordination with the Corporations and the professional licensing bodies. Hence, a complete overhaul.
