Hi,
I am looking into buying a digital video camera. What should I go for:

the choices are:
1) Hard drive / flash camcorders
2) high definition camcorders
3) pocket camcorders

Walmart is selling Samsung for $138. Trust me - buy brand and cheapest available in the market. They all work well. 6 months down the line you can get better configuration at a cheaper price. Technology is improving everyday and getting cheaper. Do not spend too much money.
I just bought a Kodak Camera for $60 which works better than $500 Canon Camera that I bought 5 years ago.
All depends on your intended use, budget, and technological sophistication.
I suggest consider only HD camcorders at this time.
Standard definition is on its way out, it is old technology.
If you view SD video on a decent computer or any of the newer TVs, the quality is very poor.
It's better to invest a little more and get a lower range HD than SD.
Also, don't bother with those small, pocket camcorders.
For best quality and features, go with a regular size.
Most people just look at video quality, but sound quality is also very important.
In some camcorders, even the branded ones, sound quality is very poor when shooting in an outdoor env. like park, arena, a sports or musical performance, etc.
Indoor video quality is also very important because a lot of times we have to record birthday parties, family events, etc. most of which are indoors.
Many camcorders don't do as well indoors.
In camcorders it is best to stick with the three top brands : Canon, Panasonic and Sony.
As for storage media, hard drive is most convenient because you don't have to buy lots of flash cards and also because it can store several hours of recording.
But access speed is slow so if your target is fast moving such as a hockey game, the video quality suffers.
Spend some time reading lots of reviews and then decide.
Lastly, don't spend too much because these days electronics get out dated very fast and are not very durable.
You can get camcorders for $200 and for $2,000.
Try to stay in the 40% - 60% range, esp. if this is your first time.

I have a flip ultra hd it so convenient and I have shot so many videos. The clarity is good and easy to upload to the web/watch on tv. Decide on the purpose before buying, my purpose was to take short videos in a moments notice, so I always have the flip handy
Do they still sell Cameras ?.
OBsolescence bound technology.
With the smart phones with still and video (full HD) technology in the market why would some one invest money on a camera ?.
My personal view which you can ignore.
