While there is little problem in surrendering the old PP, I see no reason for the additional fee !!!

I read in "Rediffmail" forum that since we went to earn money abroad, we should have no trouble paying it.
I went to the GCI Toronto section and could not find any updates/ information on this. Apparently it still has not been implimented here as of yet.
A question :
1. What happens to people who got their OCI a year back or before? Should we still surrender our Indian passport and pay the money
(sorry if it was covered in Hiren's link. But in my current computer I am unable to open links)

You are right, there are no updates on CGI website yet.

About the rediffmail forum, it's that kind of misconception of affordability that still lures people to other countries. Even today, some of my relatives feel that I am sitting on a pot of gold earning $ by conveniently forgeting my bills have to be paid in $ as well :)

Well, every country imposes fee and such, but then there are absurdities in those fees. Creating a law to surrender the passport is one thing, but creating another document requirement and charging an absurd amount is another. How about $20 for the so called sham certificate of surrender? That would have been reasonable, although still a money grab.

...and slowly might be extended to existing holders of OCI when the poor unsuspecting people go to get a new visa sticker on their newly renewed passport....
