Hi,

In last week of Feb, my car skidded on snow on 401 and hit guard rail; I didn't notice a big damage so did nothing. Now when i went to fix up, the quote is around 3,000; as inside frame got the impact. Calling insurance is good idea or should spend on my own? My deductible is 500.

The insurance is always looking to refuse a claim and hence since it is 2 months late and since you have no police report / collision report, I am sure that your claim will be refused.
I sort of had the same problem with my Toyota Corolla and though I had a police report, I choose to junk the car.
Peace

Thanks TK;

Understandably, chances are bleak; but I want to just give it a try (calling my insurance). Will bringing this to their notice can enhance my insurance, even if they refuse to give any claim.

Hi, All;

Updates on this issue- I called my insurance to know if anything possible now. They asked me if I want to proceed with the claim. Upon my questions about consequences, I was told in case claim goes thru, I will see increase in my premium and the amount (of increase) can be specified only later. I wanted to proceed taking it in a way that I will be paying back the car repair cost in installments.

But further query revealed that other than enhanced insurance; this ‘at fault’ accident will be in my record for 6 years. It will be like a conviction! And the bad part is I cannot go back now, as the accident is already reported and filed.

My questions are; Other than seeing increase in my insurance now, what other effects I can see on anything at any stage? Like, paying the money back in shape of increased insurance is one thing; will there be any other way, I can be affected. Can I plead (may be thru a paralegal) against my name being on record as ‘convict’?

-Ben

PS-Any single vehicle accident (like skid on snow) is considered as 'At fault accident'.

Ben,
I wanted to warn you before on this but due to time limits on my posts, I had to concentrate on more important stuff.
If you ever call to inform your insurance that your car damaged its frame due to snow skid, whether you opt for or opt out of a claim, they still will record your information b'cos on later date you may be at an accident and the insurance will straight away reject your claim b'cos the last time, you did not repair the frame and were driving a 'unsafe' car.
You are not a "convict" due to this skidding. It may be that you are at fault and your insurance will raise and it will be high for a period of 6 years. All the conclusions are from the "insurance hand book" (which another CD had posed a link elsewhere) and you canot hire a lawyer / paralegal to represent you.
Also remember that you were quoted $ 3000 b'cos they expected you to pay by cash. If you go to a insurance company preferred body shop the cost may be $ 5000.
Brace your self for high (very high) insurance rates. Welcome to Canada ! Enjoy reality in Canada!
Peace

Hi, TK;

Thanks for the reply. Gives me solace that it will just be increase in insurance premium and nothing more. Well, as can’t go back now; so I am prepared for that. I am not in a position to spend this money from my pocket, so will take it as loan for car repair. Insurance people also told me that amount of repair is no base for fixing increase in my rates. They use their own (slide) rule.

… about Canada, Yeah; I know some things (job etc.) are real bad. But no option here too; can’t go back. After all this was MY decision. Relatives/ friends back home think, I am plucking dollars from (maple) trees here. They also want to join me in. No point in trying another country at this age. So will stay put here and will look for some positive things for a smile …

Thanks Again;

Ben
