A question for those who have sponsored their parents to come to Canada.

A prime reason most of us sponser our parents is so that we can be close to them and of help to them in thier old age. But what does one do if (God forbid) the parent's condition deteriorates with age and he/she requires much more care than one is able to give at home? Has anyone had an experience where they had to place their parents in some kind of a long term facility over here? What kind of facility was it and how does it work?

lots of people are in what is called senior homes.

Many times the parents prefer senior homes. Its better for the parents, for the children and sometimes even better for the relationship b/w the parents and the children.

You can google senior homes and see the kind of services available.

Putting 'Indian Parent in Senior Homes'? I would say they will not like that change..Its more canadian way. It will be same as sending them in india for old age home. Atleast in india old age home, they will have company with fellow indian friends to share with them same language...etc.

If you prefer to be them with Home with you to make sure their well being. The way they have done to us when we are child. Then did not send us in other home as we needed best care.

Here is my experience.

I have my parent living with us.

We are one happy family.

I took them regularly to doctor for check up. If they need to register in any program, we do that. Indian channels hook up for their entertainment. They go regularly for walk in garden and in neighborhood.
My dad learned how to drive, so he can go once in a while where he wants. He knows driving, but directions etc is bit tough, so if he wants to go alone we take him once and then he can go alone.

My mom got sick here once, and everything was great. We took her to ER and they did some minor procedure and then we got setup with CCAC home care plan. Then nurse came everyday to our house for her IV change and other work... CCAC home care plan is good enough and nurse can manage time with yours to come at home if parent need translator. I was lucky to be at home.
Everything is free....
Then after couple of days she was fine and we got discharge from home care plan and we do follow up with family doctor.

If parent dont have insurance you can apply with goverment insurance plan and with minor fees all. medication is coverd..most of it. If they are senior then very less fees..

what else do you need? is this kind of free health care availble in india? and how about be with them when they are sick? it can be very expensive to go from here.

Just in case, if you are worried about big wait line ..if something go wrong..then they can go to india for operation or something...I dont know i prefer them to be here and we take care of them by regular visit to docotrs.

We learn something about wait line is ..if you are not aware of your health and rush to doctor ..it put in wait line..but if you go very regularly doctor can prevent or help controlling like diabetic or blood pressure and if you need any work with regular visit doctor finds it and put it through right channel ahead of time..
but if you are not good in taking care from beginnning and rush to doctor...then it can be tough.

I hope this can help..

I am very happy living with them and giving care what they need at this age. I am lucky to be with them also I feel very good doing this.

they have gone thru with all hard work..like any parent have done for their child. they deserve best as my own kid.

Thank you for your replies. Americanchai, I hope all of us who have sponsored our parents will be able to take care of them with your sense of service.

My question was more about the technicalities of care when aged seniors fall very ill or too frail to manage their own needs and require constant care that we may not be able to provide if we have to hold full time jobs. I dont know too much about Community Care Access Centres. Do they also help if there has not been medical involvment?

Hi Chandresh,
My post is an inquiry based on my interests in my parents own future and because of my lack of information about services for seniors in Canada. I met someone who had admitted her friend into a seniors residence and was quite traumatised by it.. which triggered my curiosity into the same. If you have further information on the topic I would love to hear your experiences.
The link on my signature is a group for immigrants like us who have questions related to raising kids in Canada. Two completely unrelated matters. If you are a parent and an immigrant you can always check out the immigrant parent group. It has been there on my signature for a long time and anyone is welcome to check it out.
Take care,
