Hi All,
Does anyone commute on a daily basis from Brampton/Mississauga to Guelph or vice versa? If yes, can you please share your commute experience, especially during winter time?
Also is there any option for Public transportation/car pool available?
Thanks a lot in advance.
Hi,
I did it from Mississauga (Hwy 10-Dundas) to Guelph City hall back in Jan 2005 to Jun 2005. The drive in terms of distance is about 75kms one way(from that location which south-center of mississauga). It took me about 60 to 70 min max on a good day in winters also almost same time +- 10min. The traffic going on west 401 is not that bad unless if there is some accident on hwy that stalls that backups the traffic. For me it usually used to take. Now i am not sure which part of Brampton or Mississauga you stay or intend to stay. The time to commute may vary. If i am not mistaken the highway to highway (401 West from Hwy 10 to Gordan Street exit) its roughly about 50kms. Guelph is a nice small town if you have an option to stay there its good or if you want to stay close to india community you might want think staying at Kitchener which is much closer to Guelph. I also had a friend who used to travel from Brampton to Guelph University i have to ask him which way he drove to Guelph (eighter Hwy 7 all way) or took 401.
Thanks Jagmag for your detail reply.
Well, I live close to Mavis and Steels and the distance from my home to Guelph (stone rd) is around 55 kms..I did go there few timesand it took me no more than 45 mins..But I am concerned about winter. But good to know that it doesn't take too much extra time..
Thanks again.

Bee_g,
Depends. I travel along that route all the time and I have had no troubles at all in winter but that is b'cos I am comfortable on driving on regular roads too. Actually in the snowy condition, driving on the snow in the highway is easier (but more riskier) than on the roads. The commute time will be generally 2 times more.
Your best bet would be to take the 407 or the 401 (during snow) and not take steels to connect to the 401. You should also have the option of being able to call your office and tell them that you canot come on heavy snow days.
generally outside the GTA, snow is not cleared that promptly as is done in the GTA so it may take 2 or 3 days for Guelph municipality to clean the internal roads and hence a bit tougher during winter. On highways, always follow at a slow distance a truch / truch route. It normally clears the snow for you to follow.
So in essence, it all depends on if you are comfortable of driving for 2 hours in the snow (during snow days). Will you be physically be able to do this. (I guess during the last winter, we had atleast 10-15 snow days).
Car pooling is not that much in vouge. But you do have regular Go buses to Guelph from York university which has a stop in Bramelea and Square 1.
Hope this helps
Peace

I am a Gents and not a Ladies.
I did this drive for about a year before moving from mississauga to guelph.
Easy drive as its opposite rush hour. We have a couple of people who carpool from mississauga to downtown guelph.
You can take greyhound/viarail from Brampton (not mississauga) to Guelph
Go is another option.
Once you get to downtown guelph the local transit is excellent so it can get you to wherever you want in the city in 15-20 mins max

tamilkuravan and chittesh,
Thanks very much for the detail reply. I am kinda scared to hear that the commute time will double during winter..
But I have to go to Stone road (close to guelph univ), so i guess on snowy days, GO/geryhound etc are an option.
Anyway thanks for all the information.
I do not go to Guelph all the way, But go to James Snow parkway and the 401 everyday... from Hy 10 / dundas it takes me about 35 minutes [30kms one way].. going west bound in the morning is not a prob once u touch the 401 and in the evening too, its not a prob until u reach hy 10 [i.e before 5 pm]
only if there is an accident, like there was today, it ties up the roads..
