Hi all,
I will be visiting Canada next month i.e. december -2007 on work permit and will be staying between 6 months to one year in Canada, specifically in Ottawa, Ontario. My wife is pregnant for 3 months and expected delivery month in may so my quary is that how much expenses will occur in ontario, canada in case of normal delivery or cesarian. Am I eligible to use Ontario Health card for my spouse. Does Ontario Health card reduces the cost or expenses occuring on delivery and pregnacy period. What procedure I should follow in order to reduce my own expenses on delivery. Do I need to get private medical insurance for that purpose and will medical insurance will cover costs on pregancy. Please answer my query as soon as possible as I am in great dilemma

OHIP doesn't cover any expenses for upto 3 months after arrival. So, you will need to arrange for private medical insurance. Make sure that pregnancy is covered. Many don't cover it.

Some companies provide 'OHIP Replacement' insurance to individuals who don't qualify for OHIP for the 1st 3 months. Talk to your employer about that.

Most insurance has a three month wait period. Travel insurance won't cover pregnancy related expenses. For a regular delivery, you may end up spending anywhere between 3-5 K... There are some govt. aided programs for those who qualify - based on your income, place of stay etc. I don't have the details, but the income limit for that is pretty low. If you are in IT, chances are you won't qualify.

All,
So if I get OHIP card then the delivery will be free or still I need to pay... As many of you said that private insurance would not cover the pregnancy in that case I need to pay from my own pocket or government has some provision for work permit holders.
Moreover cost you mentioned is between 2-6 K or may be more than that, is it in case of normal delivery or in cesarian.
What should be right approach in this situation.

If you and your wife will get OHIP Card and you both are already here for least 90 days then you will covered under OHIP for all expenses. You can not use your OHIP card for your's wife delivery.

If you do not have OHIP card then you will be treated as non-resident then charges could be much higher. As an example: an emergency room visit for Non-OHIP card holder is $250 (minimum). Cesarian would cost $10K+

Private Insurance covers pregancy only if you have bought it in the first month of pregancy or before that. There is generally eight month waiting to be covered under private insurance.
