Hi rsk,
Your trip from Toronto to Vancouver in a 10 day time span is just nice to start and complete and will leave a little tired at the end of the day, but fresh once again the next morning, for another run at the road.

Since you are taking hops by planes, I am sure you will be renting a good car and on a one way run. Please make sure with the rentals people that it is a one way rental and see who will give you the break. Otherwise you will end up paying the return milage and the other charges that go with it.

If you are taking a hop from Detriot MI to Bute (Butte) MT, it will leave you with ample time for the Canadian stops. Bute is the big town in Montana and you will have to arrange for the Rentals prior to arrival there. You might hit a road block there, if you do not find a one way rental at that location. If that is the case, then, spend a day there and take another hop to Calgary. The flight from Detroit to Butte is just 100 bucks+.

I am sure you will get a one way rental from Calgary to Vancouver with a small drop off charge. Start looking for it right now.

I have taken the road trip from Calgary to Vancouver, through Banff, Lake Louise to Revelstoke, Kelowna, Merritt and took a break in Surrey. TCH 1.
My only suggestion to you would be for you to get a good Six cylinder High performance Car, such as Nissan Maxima Class and pay the extra 30 odd bucks for the rentals and an additional 30 bucks for the gas and you will feel the trip to be a breeze up the mountains and the pass, by upgrading it to the next level. Skimping is not for this section of the trip.

Plan it well. Do a little study of the road maps and plan your stops and breaks. Provide adequate breaks along the way, take it easy and enjoy the trip. If you see a section at which you want to break and stay, do it. You don't need to reserve any accomodations any where. Just go and do it. It is your break, your trip and do it in your style.
