Good point, paneer is great too, but isn't paneer supposed to be more fattening?

What's the logic/reasoning behind that?

To me, any industrially processed food (aka junk food) can never sit well with the body, and is thus fattening.

It is not the quantity, but the quality, of food that determines whether it causes weight gain or not.
As I understand it, putting on weight is the human body's defense mechanism - it is trying to protect itself against what it perceives as threat.
It is the same for other animals as well - you will notice that when animals are sick, they either become very fat or very skinny.

Getting back to the point - I am not saying that tofu will cause weight gain for everyone, and that paneer will never.
However, one is obviously more industrially processed than the other, and to me that is reason enough to stay away.

Just because something is available at a health food store and costs an arm and leg doesn't mean it is healthy :p
Take those vitamin supplements as another example.....

I think tofu is great, it tastes like egg bhurji ! my kid like it too, if you slice it and chopp it and then fry with little oil and add some green paper, its really delicious. I dont know about real nutrition content but one of my friend telling me if you are pure vegetarian, its good to eat tofu, it can supply required things? any CD comments?

I see what you mean Patrickm.

I don't eat processed cheese (you know those ready-sliced ones for sandwiches) for the same reason. Better to stick with naturally derived foods than chemically altered products.

Just out of curiosity, what's your take on GM foods?

I agree with Patrick. If you make paneer from 1% milk. It will have more protein content and less fat. At least you know what went into making that paneer. Any food prepared with highly industrialized process? i am not sure. Ypu can make paneer bhurjee just like Tofu bhurjee. If anybody is able to find paneer made from Indian shops with 1% milk , please post the name of the shop.

I think he meant green pepper :)
Tofu is generallysupposed to be very healthy (unless you deep fry it).
You can get tofu products to replace meat if you are a veg. or trying to cut down on meat. Tofu dogs, burgers, 'meat'balls, sandwich coldcuts..they are all very delicious (im a former non-veg and i find them very satisfying)..
tofu is supposedly good for cholesterol (studies shows it benefits men more then women though).
