Any experiences of Canadian citizens entering US from Mexico by road on a Citizenship card or any other document other than a passport.

Same thing remember NAFTA? But these days I strongly advice passport. I did enter US from Carribean and Mexico city with just the card.

pre 9/11 .. we could enter from mexico to US just with the landed paper and a valid photo id ( showing the same name as landed paper & passport )

now to even enter from canada is viewed very cautiously.

better to always carry the passport with you when traveling outside canada
