I just purchased a 2000 Hyundai Elantra - paid the advance and will pay the rest of the amount and collect the car on Monday.
I need to get my insurance by tomorrow.
I have a G License issued in Oct-2005. I swapped in my US license to get my G. My US license was issued in Jan-2003. I also posses an Indian license issued on Oct 1997.
All the online quotes I tried is giving me around 5500-6500 CAD annually :-(
My friend has a 2003 Honda Civic and he's a new driver like me and he's only paying 4200 / year.
What am I doing wrong? Are the online quotes erroneous?
I was sure that it won't go more than 4500 annually. So this extra 1500-2000 has been a nasty shock.
Could someone suggest something that'll help me get a better rate?
I have to get the insurance by tomorrow afternoon. So I don't have a lot of time.
I expected to get quotes from 2-3 places and get the lowest - but all the quotes are huge.
I tried RBC, Kanetix and BlairDirect to generate the quotes.

BTW, won't the dealer need the policy details to get your plates, or are you planning on transfering your old plates.

Now you don't have time to shop around and it is weekend. So, you will have to go with lowest of the quotes you got.
You cancel the insurance after some time and go with some other company if it is beneficial (cost of cancellation vs money you might save with other company).

Looks like I'll have to go with RBC - TD said it takes them 3 weeks to give a quote for a first time insurance seeker. Belair's phone redirected to a voice mailbox (french). PC Financial won't give insurance unless you have a G or G2 for at least 3 years. CIBC does not have auto insurance. Manulife also does not seem to have auto insurance. Looks like RBC has a monopoly on insurances (at least for first timers). *sigh*
It's weird to pay in one year as insurance an amount that's pretty close to the total amount I paid for the car. In 3 years I'd have paid enough insurance to buy a pretty decent new car I guess. Life is tough the first year in Canada, is it not?

That's not true. Besides RBC, there are other's although smaller shops. But you need the time. You should have planned it atleast 3-4 weeks in advance.
One should try going thru an agent, they do the ground work for you.

Yep, I waited till I finalized the car - mistake.
Anyway, in case anyone's interested, my auto insurance premium for the next 12 months is CAD 476/month :-(
That's after a 10% discount I got (since I also have my property insurance with RBC).
