I think the question should not be whether to bring things from India or not - the question should be what is the value of things that one wants to bring from there and how much will be the freight charges.
I for one brought one full container and paid about a total of US$ 7,000 - but the things I brought were almost worth more than C$40,000 - and if I had to buy them here, they would have not not costed me anything less than 65-70 k. And mind you, it was not only exclusive furniture, and household utensils and electronics, but also sentimental things like my family videos, family photographs, favourite books, tons of clothes which I did not want to throw away etc etc.
That thing also helped me another manner....I was well settled in my new apartment within the first two weeks and people who visited us could not imagine that we had not been living here for a couple of years atleast!
and by the way........all my electronics work here....because things like VCRs, Amplifiers, cassette decks, dvd players bought in asia all have dual voltage settings. I only did not bring my 29 inches TV....and I repent because I had to buy one here (a multi system) for $1500! I ned a multi system to be able to see my family videos recorded on PAL system.
Everyone has priorities - depends what are yours, and that shoud drive your decision whether or not to bring things from there. Recently a young couple friend migrated here from New York - they have brought only 4 suitcases.......sold or gave off everything in USA!
