I have an old Majic Jack that is lying in a shoe box. I will try it and see if it could be put to some more usage. If I can, I will get a few more miles out of it.
Things I didn't know existed until just recently: the Obihai OBiTalk, a gizmo that plugs into your router and pairs with SIP-based voice-over-IP services like Google Voice; and GVJack App, a Windows utility that links a MagicJack to your Google Voice account. Please read on..

Good Luck.

As you must be aware , the old one needed a computer for use and the new one can be plugged directly into the router.

I had the services of an old MJ and it had an annual fee of 9 bucks/yr. Soon after five years got over, I got an offer for the new MJ -Plus at a cost of $35 for the gadget plus $99 fee for five years. I am using the same now. The old one was retired and now rests in shoebox.
Now for the new MJPlus: It is on a router that runs 24/7 as the internet is on perpetually. Might have gone down sometime in the night, but it was up and running when I checked in the mornings. This was due to a power cut off on a line transformer. I have gotten used to it and I find that it is not that critical, except resetting the alarm clock, coffee machine and clocks on all of the utilities such as the stove clock, the Microwave and all...I get to know that when all of the clocks are flashing in the morning and No coffee ready. I want to make sure that the next dishwasher I get will come with a Passport.
For a brief period, I took services from Google Voice. It is still on in one of my laptops. I will try it with the OLD MJ, when I get into a mood. I was thrilled to see the article and I can find out from my other friends who also have GV.
Currently I use a system from Google Chrome, called Hangouts. Seems to be working really good. Better than the SKYPE. I hope it stays like that. Skype became a commercial entity, so, I will slowly drop them from my regular usage. If the MJ could be used through GV, then, I will revert back. Since GV itself was for voice and free, plugging it and testing the OLD MJ will 'only' provide me with an external phone line, with no fixed number. So, it will be good for 'ONLY' outgoing calls. If you buy a Hangout phone number, you might find the OLD Mj might become handy with an incoming number. Once again you will have to get the computer running 24/7, all over again. Back to square one.
That is the advantage knowing about the old and the new. (Technology.)
