I don't advocate cruelty to animals nor their killing. But it does take place, the reason is because the animals have become a food item and it gets on their table. Long long ago it was a necessity for those who needed them for their survival. It may not be so in the TROPICS.
Just something to read about to get to know the conditions that existed here in Canada in the earlier years. :

There was no fuel for lighting and so the fat was used as fuel and even as screening materials for the bitter cold winters.
They hunted the wild animals and used their skins for their outer wear. SEALS were their choice because of the extremely soft skins and its pure white colour. They also ate its meat and so also its flippers.
Electricity and Refrigeration only came into existence in the early 1900's. So, they smoked the meats in the hickory huts or their meats were pickled in pits and barrels. That was the advent of the Turkey Jerkys and Beef Jerkys.
I cannot even describe the word "CULTURE" here, other than by saying these two words, Agriculture or Horticulture. But for those who have grown accustomed to eating meats and meat products, it has become just about natural to buy and consume them in their day to day usage and enjoy it to their fullest. A few from the ORIENT will consider this otherwise, because their culture detests the killing of ANY animal.
It is nice to know a few of the terms used in this context and I would not like to provide any explanation to the terms either. Slaughter houses, Meatworks, Shambles and knackeries are the words that comes to my mind and the next one is Abattoirs.
The above terms are used liberally by those who are in business and in their commercial usage. And our Government is supposed to take good care of all of the consumers, by providing them with a good brand of products and testing them beyond reproach, prior to marketing.
Even after a few of the untoward incidents in their inspection, finding them unsuitable by consumers away from our borders, they have not taken IMMEDIATE action, nor stopped its distribution forthwith but dragged their feet, playing roulette with every consumer's life.
ONE More thing I must add, these were not conducted under humane conditions, which the public does not know about. That is the part that I would like you all to chime in here and STOP it at their door.
Ban The Sow Stalls in Manitoba.
As Manitoba is Canada's largest pig producer and Manitoba Pork is the voice of pork producers in the province, the Canadian Coalition for Farm Animals and Canadians for Ethical Treatment of Food Animals are asking Manitoba Pork to voluntarily phase out sow stalls by 2017.
To spread this message, CCFA and CETFA have launched a new website featuring never-before-seen footage of sows on a Canadian farm crammed into tiny, dismal crates. As well, they have jointly produced a 30-second commercial, Sow Stalls: A Mother's Worst Nightmare. The ad began airing on Manitoba stations in May, 2011.

The last I heard is that Honorable Galen Weston wants to shed his holdings in Loblaws stores and get out of the Grocery business altogether and concentrate on his Real Estate Holdings. May be many others will follow suit. Will vegetarianism take a foot hold here in Canada after this?!
Do your best to stop this merciless killing of animals. Even now they say it will take Five more years before they will provide the pigs with the benefit of extra room and they say that they will drop it from TEN to FIVE years. What a shame.
