Jonav,
In essence, from the little bit I know, Oakville is not really considered to be the ideal place to rent. Firstly, I am not aware of too many rental properties in the area. Oakville is definitely an expensive place to own property.
So when you ask for opinions on Oakville, in terms of whether it is a good place to live or not.. it really depends on what you want? It depends on where you'll work.. etc.
For some people having a 'desi' environment is important.. I would like to think that for people that are looking for a more desi environment, Oakville is not the place to be in the GTA.
As far as groceries and other amenities, (again for desi groceries etc). I would think Mississauga/Brampton would be the closest.

Hi Pratickm and Yellowknife,
Thanks for the posts. Our lawyer also told us that Oakville is very large and not too common with Indians (Desi's). Though just to share I checked out a school in Oakville and the Principal is a Indian lady "Mrs. Sahai". I think its better we visit, Brampton, Missi (can't spell it) and Oakville first and then decide accordingly.
Thanks again for your inputs.

Brampton and Oakville !!!!!!
A world apart.
Do check out places like Clarkson, Bronte and Burlington.
Brampton, Mississauga and Oakville are very different from each-other.
Oakville has been predominantly a \"white\" town so far. And as the real-estate demand growth is being fueled by immigration, it is just matter of time that it's character would be very much like tha of Mississauga....though South Oakville will not be hit by this trend that soon....reasons being its proximity to Lakeshore and the prices of homes. Indian groceries are available everywhere, including Oakville...though they will certainly be little more expensive than they will be in in Mississauga and certainly more than in Brampton. Anyway, the distances between these cities is not that difficult to cross and groceries are mostly purchased once a week...so this can be worked in seamlessly into your commute to work or on your weekends.
Mississauga is very mixed, though most of its new inhabitants come from Middle-East and South-East Asia. Wealth from the Middle-East has been a major factor in increase of the prices in this region in the last 4-5 years.
Ratio in Brampton tilts little moretowards Blue collar but the new developments in Steeles/Mississauga and Castlemore areas have helped to change this ratio and also led to increase in real-estate values. Brampton is #6 on the list of cities that are likely to expect major growth in real-estate prices...with the first 5 cities out of GTA.
End of the day, before you listen to the thoughts and reasons for why other bought homes in these cities, I recommend you to make a list of MUST haves and the things that are important to you in your new home. Then make a trip to these cities on your own (with the help of a map) and make a lsit of areas that interest you the most. Thereafter, sit down with your knowledgeable Realtor(R) to work out the best course of action to achieve your LUST HAVES within your means.

Everybody has his or her own opinion..
My take ..
1>
For new immigrants if possible move to Toronto , because of excellent public transit...
If u do not like Toronto then Missisage and Brampton are next ...
2> rent appartment in the 1st year (preferably toronto ) until u find a location where u think u will like to live..
Go trains on Oakville like run every 15 min and takes 35 min to get to downtown.. but the problem is the connectivity is good only to downtown...
If u have to go to the rest of the city u are in trouble..
Plus u will need a car to drive to the Go station..
Winters the GO trains are late or don't run well and cannot always be counted on..
Thanks for your post. Being on CDesi for past 2 months and reading the discussions and seen Toronto (once), our desire...heart to migrate to Canada has withered but still for PR purposes we'll have to move one day. Thanks for your input...I save this for future.
