We just got our landing papers and we are based in the USA. We will be landing soon in Canada via peace bridge. We were informed that we can receive the above mentioned cards only in Canada. So if we rent a PO Box in Canada would that be alright. As we will be returning to USA after doing the landing.

Most of the Post Boxes that you pay dues for cost around $120.00/annum. (+)

These Post Box service providers, Only COLLECT the mail for you and HOLD them till they are picked up by YOU. (You have to come down and collect them). They do not collect CERTIFIED, REGISTERED POST, and COURIER Letters. They are normally Returned back to the senders. But before they send them back, they will provide you with a card in your box, telling you that there is 'A' letter of that nature. But they will not tell you specifics. The period that they hold for has to be discussed with them. ( The couriers' that they do not patronise, will never appear there for delivery. It is an unwritten understanding between them.)

There are a few others, a NOTCH higher in services and cost you a little more than the regulars. If you PAY EXTRA, they will forward the mail collected in the box at cost to you. You make the deal with them. They send you the same by courier to your current address, for which you pay the extra. If you are palsy with them, they will even tell you over the phone all of the details, which will cost you nothing.

I just want to inform you that there is a CATCH 22, situation here. They will need a Canadian Passport, or a PR card, and a Bank account number and you pay them by a cheque drawn on a Canadian Bank. Alternate, is a Valid Canadian Driver's License and a valid North American Credit Card. I am sure you have these or can obtain one in a hurry here. (No Problem there).

Hope this helps.

Freddie.

In order to apply for the Ontario Health Card, you need one document from each of the following:

List 1: Proof of Citizenship / Eligible Status - A document to prove that you are a Canadian citizen or hold another status that makes you eligible for Ontario Health insurance coverage

List 2: Proof of Residency - A document that displays your name and current home address and confirms that your permanent and principal home is in Ontario

List 3: Support of Identity - A document that displays both your name and signature

For a list of documents under each list refer here -> http://www.forms.ssb.gov.on.ca/mbs/ssb/forms/ssbforms.nsf/AttachDocsPublish/014-9998E-82~1/$File/9998-82E_.pdf

Since coverage starts 90 days after arrival, the card gets mailed to your home address a week or so, prior to coverage starting. I'm not sure that you can produce the above documents within a few days of arrival, and if you tell them that you are planning to return to US, they won't issue the card. Besides there is a eligibility criteria that stats - You must be physically present in Ontario 153 days in any 12-month period.

As regards the PR card, generally at the border they ask for a address where the card is to be mailed. In the past people have reported that Canadian immigration authorities have refused to accept your application if you tell them that you will be returning to the US in a few days.

Just keep these things in mind.

Out of curiosity, can I ask a Q - If you have decided to make Canada your home, why do you want to return to the US. Is it not possible for you to come here once in for all, after finishing whatever you want to in the US, it will make things a lot cleaner/easier with the authorities
