Fiscal crisis at TTC,

Here's the menu of TTC cuts up for consideration today:

- Close the Sheppard subway line, which carries 40,000 riders daily.

- Impose a fare hike that could drive up the cost of an adult token or ticket by 25.

- Eliminate bus routes which perform poorly.

- Cancel introduction of 100 new buses to ease rush-hour crunch.

- Permit further overcrowding of the system in 2008.

- Cancel off-peak improvements made under the TTC's ridership growth plan during the last few years.

- Do not open the TTC's new Mount Dennis Garage.

I support the proposed service cut and price hike of the TTC.
I also am very pleased to note that the councellors postponed a proposed hike on land transfer and vehicle transfer fees.
Now, the mayor is really acting prudent. He has cancelled a 1.2 million renovation to his office which was not at all necessary. This will encourage the city to act more prudently while distributing resources or clubbing 2 or more services into one. (For eg. one of the 2 libraries/ community centres which are close to each other can be closed for prudence)
This will also teach a lesson to the Ontario govt. for neglecting giving proper money to the city, TTC, transit and for green initiatives.
Since this is an election year for ontarians, I am sure that the liberal govt. will come and help the city at the last moment to gain votes.

Why does a monthly trasit pass cost $63 in Montreal whereas the similar monthly pass in Toronto is about $96. I remember reading in the Toronto Star about Montreal transit getting some subsidies. Wonder why not Toronto (when it already is among the most expensive transits systems in the world)?
