What do CD's feel about the Union Pearson express that is to open today?

The article in the star says that the tracks are 28 m above the road and that 25 kms from Pearson to Union station will be covered in 25 mins.

All this seems fine but I am worried about the $ 27.5 adult fare. I think it is a bit too steep.
Though the travel time of 25 mins is good, would not taking the TTC bus to Kipling station and then to Union station by the subway limit your adult fare to $ 3 or so. Yeah. It might take an hour for you to reach Union station but you do save $ 24.5.

Or have they now stopped TTC buses from coming to pearson airport?

Its only good if you are a SINGLE business traveller , travelling from Pearson to Downtown..cheaper than taxi. That too ONLY if you are going to downtown.

But If 2 or more people or family are travelling with luggage, you might as well take a taxi , you will pay almost the same..plus less hassle & work..for 50-60 bucks you can reach downtown from Pearson..fixed fare by taxi.

Plus these fools are assuming everyone lives at Union.

Imagine you live in North York Or Scarborough or West End , what are you going to do ?
Are you first going to carry all your luggage through TTC to Union then take the Pearson train from there ? You might as well carry your luggage to Kipling through TTC & take the 192 Rocket TTC bus from there ,or take a cab directly from your house.

Its good for Airport workers who go there to work everyday, but the price is TOO steep for them too..if some kind of monthly subsidised pass is worked out for them it will be good.

This thing will be a HUGE flop..but the gov & the transit agency knows it , but it has already looted the public & the tax payer's money with this flop through contracts & consultant fees etc. They have made out like bandits, that was the whole purpose..corruption & fees..it was never about what the public wanted.

It will be a blow to the airport taxi cab drivers for sure. They will lose at least 25% of their business.

I think Union Pearson Express is mainly aimed at Business Travellers who have no check in baggage and travel to/from airport during rush hours. The traffic is crazy during that time. I dont think it caters to family travellers, people travelling long distances like India with 2 check in baggages each. Taxi is definitely the way to go for such ppl. Business travellers who travel to Airport during rush hours won't mind this 27.5 $ at all. It is quite cheap considering the traffic that one has to go through during rush hours.

Trains will be only 1/4 full if only business travelers take it.

Too many trains at 15 mins interval..most will only be qtr full :(

Business travellers just prefer limos paid for by their companies and door to door service. If they get down at Union, again they will have to take a cab or walk or take the TTC if their hotel is a few blocks away.

Lot of hotels in and around the airport..most will just stay there and won't bother staying in hotels at Union.

Will not be a Flop. With presto card the fair is 19$. Return trip is 38$ for an adult , $16.15 for senior or a student and under $10 for a kid. The fare for Weston is as low as 11$. and 15$s to Bloor.
This will bring tourist, business traveler (generally time pressed and light on luggage) and people (shopper) waiting in transit to tourist destinations, hotels, malls and majority businesses along bay street in downtown with one day return trip.
I am sure there will be free shuttles at union station made available to improve on footfall in future, connecting other major downtown destinations and hotels.
Music and Sports loving fans and exhibitionists will be another set of consumers on certain days.

Family trip cost is bit high. Families do not go often to airport and will use taxi in any case. This is well rehearsed study done prior to investing millions of dollars and deciding on fair.
The only change I see in future is since 140 trips a day is towards higher side may be due to panam games this summer, might come down in future.
