Hi,

Just wanted to share this with you guys especially those who temporarily work in the US and moving to Canada as Perm Residents...

I'm still here in the US and I just came back from Toronto last weekend. I was flown down there to do my final interview last Friday with a client for a long-term contract.

The interview lasted for about 2 hours (including a practical test). I was interviewed by 3 managers and was given a practical test as well. After the interview process, one of the managers asked me to fill-out a form for background check purposes. I felt that I did well in the interview and the fact that the client wanted to do a background check kinda gave me a hint that they might be interested in me.

Just yesterday, I got a call from the recruiting agency and asked me for 3 professional references and the recruiter did confirm that the client was really interested. I immediately gave the recruiter my 3 references and so now I'm just waiting for the results. I don't know the status of the background check being conducted by the client though.

Anyways, I think it's just a matter of time before I get the offer (hope I'm right =)). I have no idea how long it usually takes for the background check/reference check to get completed.

If I do get it, it would be a true blessing and my family and I look forward to start a new life in Canada. I got pretty discouraged when I read about the so called 'Canadian experience' but I guess US experience counts after all. I've been here in the US for more than 5 years and my green card process is going nowhere so I'm glad I made the right choice of applying for Canadian PR.

Lastly, this may be too general of a question but what is the hourly rate for an IT professional with almost 10 years of software development experience ? Just wanted to make sure that I am not shortchanged. Thanks a bunch and good luck to everyone!

Generally, if the background check is done and your reference people are contacted, it means you will be getting an offer letter soon...It has happened to several I know...
All the Best....!

background checks usually invole just criminal and credit checks... a lot of employers are doing them these days... usually takes just a couple of days if you have been a resident for atleast the last two years (in which case the agency contracted to conduct the check just talks to the local authorities) but in your case it may take up to a week to ten days since you live in the US and it will go through the rcmp...

and yes, if they are checking means its the last step before they make an offer... conducting background checks isnt cheap, it costs the employer about $2k per check... so they only do it in cases where they are very serious...

Thanks for your input. It's very encouraging. As to hourly rate for a 10 year software developer, what is the standard range in Toronto? Thanks again.

depends on the position.. but if its a longer term contract it would be lower than what the going rate in the market is...

Does the range 50CDN-65CDN/hr sound reasonable for a 10-year exp. IT professional (purely contracting)?

I'm going to do development, enhancements and prod. support plus I may also be on-call in some instances so there's opportunity for OT pay as well.

Thanks in advance.
