Hi Friends,
We are moving as PR holders from USA in Feb 2005. Do you know any movers whom you have used to take your household items (one bedroom apartment)? We have not found anyone reasonable so far.
Please e-mail us at Thanks.

Sam,
We did the same thing, but dont remember the name. The goods came first and we followed after a day.
Call couple of movers from the yellow pages and they give free estimate after looking over the items. One BR apartment shouldn't take too much.

You must, absolutely, imperatively use a mover who is a member of the Registered Movers Association at moving.org
Hiring someone else is simply asking for a rip-off.
Fill out a form on their website and they will call you and set up a time to have someone come over and give you a "binding estimate".
Anyone who either gives you a quote without visiting your home and seeing your stuff, or gives you a non-binding quote is simply setting you up for a rip-off.
The final price you will pay in such case will be several times more than what they quoted you in the first place.
That is assuming you ever get your stuff, and it is still in usable condition.

Sam,
Since I have been contacting different movers and getting estimates to move from NJ to Missi..
In my opinion...I have been more impressed with the professionalism shown by Mayflower Transit.
They give a non-binding estimate after taking a look of what needs to be moved, what they have to pack etc..I found the estimate decent enough to pursue it further.
Another thing...in a non-binding estimate, even if you cross the original estimate, you would not have to pay more than 10% of the original estimate. So essentially you would never have to pay more than 110%. Much better than the ones which would charge based on the final cubic feet used etc...
How about UPS? Someone I know had moved their things through UPS to Toronto. They had packed everything in big cartons and got them shipped through UPS. It didn't seem to cost too much. They said that a couple of things were a bit damaged, though. Suggested double-layered thick boxes - even the big ones in Staples didn't seem to be sturdy enough.
Of course, they didn't ship things like bed, tables etc..
If you don't have much stuff, UPS is a good option.
But I have heard UPS charging huge brokerage fees in some cases - watch out for that.
Another option is Greyhound.
Their delivery is slower, but a lot cheaper.
Of course, if you plan to move large furniture then best to go with a mover.
