Metro Toronto convention centre will be hosting a major Construction, Building engineering convention from 1st to 3rd Dec.

It is the largest construction and engineering related convention in Canada and it can offer good networking opportunities for those looking for a job in this field.

Registration is free from this website

http://www.constructcanada.com/tor/frame04a.html

Some suggestions:

Go thru the list of exhibitors, zero down on the companies in your feild you want to target.

Approach their booths and speak to the reps at the show. This is not a job fair, but it offers a good opportunity to come face to face with reps of major engineering companies, who will be willing to share theire company info.

Dont approach directly as a job seeker, talk to them about their company and products....relate and experience you had with similar companies / projects/ products ...try to get the rep eager to talk , if he/she obliges, then and then seek info on career opportunities and whom to contact in the company....or even more , hand him your contact or your resume.

You never know what might just click.....at the very least, those in this field will get an opportunity to get to know firms in their field, first hand.
I read somewhere that more that 50% jobs get filled by networking , so try not to miss this opportunity.

I came to know about this just this morning , otherwise I'd have posted it sooner. I will be there too, if anyone would like to meet me there please PM me.

Good luck friends.

Excellent! That is what I call "useful" suggestions.
Great. Keep it up!

I guess there is some value in going to these events even if it is to collect a few business cards.

A few more tips for people attending these events.

Wear you best biz suit and the best shoes you can afford. People generally look at shoes first believe it or not (shallow yes but true).

Have a confident and happy demeanour when you approach people. Do not hesitate. If somebody is not interested in talking to you MOVE ON. There are many nice people out there.

Never act needy. Talk as if you already have some good offers on the table and are looking for something better. Everyone needs somebody who is sought after.

Develop a sense of humour. People will remember you if u make them laugh even if they forget everything else.

Write thank u notes after meeting people. Reference something interesting they told u.

I have only 2 cents to contribute, not a cent more, not a cent less ;-)

Mishtar India,

Thx for posting the link and the info. Should help some desi engineers. Desis need to get out of their cocoon (no offence intended) and meet professionals in their field. This is one of the best opportunity.

To tell the truth, I got my first job by attending a convention. I was completing my master's and looking for job. The big boss interviewed me first and suggested his deputy to talk to me. Had the interview over dinner (and one beer each). Got the verbal offer on teh table and the offer letter followed in four days.
