guys

thanks for the input. But let me be very clear

I am planning to gift my nephew with a DVD. My nephew in India. So I would not like to send him a gift, which he receives enthusiastically, but is of no use.

And to be very frank, there is nothing else to buy for him from Canada, except for Chocolates. India is too warm for Canadian sweaters. India has much variety of clothes. And some of the stuff is too expensive. And above all, he is just a kid.

So I am still in a limbo as to what to buy for him

What I did was to go into 220 V shop and bought a Citizen Multi-Region DVD Player. The beauty of this is that it works on both 110V and 220 V and you can play it on both NTSC and PAL TV's as well playing all types of DVD's i.e., Region 0,1, etc.

I haven't purchased this as a gift for somebody but rather wanted it for personal use and the flexibility it offers ie., if I move to India or Europe in the next couple of years I can still carry this DVD player with me.

I have been using this for the past 6 months and no problems so far (world-wide warranty of 1 year).

I wonder whats the reason for this region specific encoding....I mean if CDs can be played anywhere in the world, whats is spefici to the DVD that makes it so...

sort of NTSC/PAL problem.

Motion picture studios want to control the home release of movies in different countries because theater releases aren't simultaneous (a movie may come out on video in the U.S. when it's just hitting screens in Europe). Also, studios sell distribution rights to different foreign distributors and would like to guarantee an exclusive market. Therefore they required that the DVD standard include codes to prevent playback of certain discs in certain geographical regions. Each player is given a code for the region in which it's sold. The player will refuse to play discs that are not coded for its region. This means that a disc bought in one country may not play on a player bought in another country. Some people believe that region codes are an illegal restraint of trade, but no legal cases have established this.

PAL/NTSC problems will be applicable to VCD players as well.. as it is a the way TV uses video signals.. but VCDs can be read by players worldwide as they don't have the region code protection.. but the VCD players may not be used universally..

Buy a Philips DVP 642 DVD PLAYER - It has a built in decoder and works fine in India, I bought one for my nephew. Works fine. Costs Ca $ 99.00 plus taxes and 85.00 @ Canada Computers.
