I would like to know what is the ongoing processing time for a graduate work permit and if I can apply before December as I will be graduating in December. My convocation is in June and I will not get the invitation for it till March. My final transcript will be out by Mid January. Please, tell me what are my options.

Neha,
Your best bet is to wait for your final transcript. After that, take a letter from the registrar's office indicating that you have finished your course requirements and you will be getting your degree in June. With that letter you can apply for a Grad work permit.

In an another thread you had mentioned that your friends follow a study option after the end of the work permit. If you apply for a work permit, say in Jan, you should get it by Feb. You can begin your work from February. What you get is a year of work experience during this time. This helps you to acquire the (min amt) of 1 year work experience necessary for immigration.
If we assume this time limit, then your WP will expire on Jan 31, 2006 ( if you get it from Feb 2005). Your best bet, to remain in status would be to apply for the Spring semester as a Research student. Merely doing course work wont help you. In other words you would need a M.A.Sc rather than a M.Eng. Apply for courses where the Prof is willing to fund you and you do some research work for him/her.
So lets assume you start work from May 2006. You will have all your papers (work letter+work exp etc.,) by then. Somewhere in the middle of May 2006 you can file your application form. You should clearly indicate under what category you plan to immigrate. Make sure that there is a significant amt of overlap between ur job during your work permit and your research job. If there is no overlap, explain why you moved to another job and why you are applying under the stated category.
'Of cos, to be smug, there is an easy option also available. However, I advise all folks from India to avoid this scenario... i.e., Marriage with a PR or Citizen of Canada. That will expediate your process of getting immigration and make it hassle free. However, you lose the freedom associated with independent application !
