Hi all,
We arrived in canada in apr 2009 and declared the amount with the immigration officers.
After filing our returns in 2010 we received a letter from CRA for the world income with the amount converted to canadian dollars for the period in 2009 before we came to Canada, to process the GST / HST credit for july 2010 to Apr 2011.
What should we do, is this information normally required?
Thanks in advance,
Regards,
jwagh

GST is calculated based on your world income. You should have filled in form RC 151 when you first entered. You are eligible to get GST from the time you enter. For that CRA needs your world income from Jan 1 to the date you entered Canada. This is normal.
Link to RC 151 - GST Credit Application-> http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pbg/gf/rc151/rc151-10e.pdf
Check out Section 3 - Statement of Income
Generally if your income is over $40K a year you do not get any GST.
Hi All,
Thanks again sudesingh for your link and reply.
I also called up the CRA number and they are very helpful in giving all the information that you ask for after posing security questions.
I am posting this for the benefit of the new comers.
One is entitled for quite a considerable GST credit from the time that they lands and is family income related. The benefit is available after one files for their tax returns.
For eg. if we have landed in Apr 2009 and we file our first returns in Apr 2010 we get our gst credit forJuly 2010,oct2010,jan2011 and apr 2011. For this the CRA requires the total family income from Jan 2009 to dec 2010 .But since we landed in Apr 2009 we have to provide for world income from Jan 2009 to apr 2009 and canadian income from apr 09 to dec 09 which is obtained from T4 statements from organisations in which one works. However for the world income from jan 09 to apr 09 one can write a letter stating the income or state it as 0 as the case may be.
Now we also get the gst credit for july 09,oct 09,jan 10,apr10 but for this we need to fill the rc15 form availabe on the CRA Site or the one which sudesingh has provided.
Both the letter and the rc 15 form can be posted to the cra at the suggested cra address.

jwagh
