Engine heating is an emergent situation - any further running with this problem can result in very expensive engine damage viz bending of valves as temps inside the engine are like 700 - 800 c . Last time when I had such a problem , upon mechanic's recommendation , I left the car in a shopping center's parking - he towed it the next morning and fixed it cheap ... a rad pipe was leaking .

Fido.
The problem that you may have is a leak in your radiator. If the radiator of a car does not have enough coolant then the car is bound to heat up and the heater too will not function. I had a similar problem with my Maxima and after fixing the leak and filling up the coolant everything was fine.
Cheack for leaks in the radiator if you are a bit savvy with engines, it does not require any rocket science knowledge. If there is a leak, you can get many types of leak stop powders from Canadian Tire, pour the powder and fill up the radiator with coolant. If it is a minor leak this should work. and your heating too should be fine.
Thank you all for your response. especially Maharaj and Srvjit. you diagnosed it right..just that few hours late. Had to pay $125 to dealer to diagnose the same. But it is good to know.
Not sure how the cooolent level got lower. Any tips on checking it regularly?
