Isn't it better than not having a camera and so not being able to capture some wonderful moments of today which you would love to see 10-20-30 years from now.

How I repent I did not have any camera when I was a child and I have no photos (may be 2 or 3 only) till I started earning myself!

At what cost?
The same people at the same income level would maybe have a 3bedroom home instead of 5 bedroom with 4 washrooms and enough money to spare after mortgage to buy a even better camera cash. or go to the movies more often, or go to vacations more often or..
they can do all that but now they are paying tons and tons of interest and not getting the best value....

There is nothing wrong Live Life King Size if you can afford without taxpayer's money or credit card debt.

I think this (Live Life King Size) is the only problem which is blowing the whole world into this financial mess and making food a privilege item in few developing countries.

The same person can say - at what cost is this person with a 3 bedroom house is spending his life - for them the cost is not monetary - money will come and go, but time will never be the same - one will never be young again, one will never get that time back. It is a pleasure which is not really defineable.

And in my experiences with life, those who spend more are likely to make more because to meet their material desires, they are forced to take bigger risks and make more money. Most people restrict their expenses according to their incomes while some smart people work towards meeting their expenses by finding ways to increase incomes.

One of the lessons I learnt from my very successful boss - he used to tell me that he never understands why we Indian CAs spend so much time in working towards reducing our taxes - if the same time was rather spent in working towards making more income, one would be better off since each extra rupee made will leave some exptra balance with you even after paying highest taxes.

And another lesson I learned 20 years ago from my uncle - pahle kharcha bandho, phir khud hi uski bharpai ke liya kaam dhoond loge.

It is not about having a camera or not. It is about how you get one.

Lets face it... we live in a capitalist world.. not a socialistic one... Capitalism has succeeded much more than Socialism.

I was recently hearing one of the desi FM talk show... He was quoting a recent news article - I don't remember the source, but surely it can be found in the net some where. It was mentioned that poverty in Canada is on the rise and the main reason is because of the socialistic set up, the basic necessities are taken care of by the govt. So those below poverty are not 'enough' motivated to go get a good job.

So will all the poor be fed sufficiently in developing countries, if people become extremely careful in spending? I don't think so.

Economy grows not by saving on expenses, but by increasing income and spending it. More the cycles, more the economy. Shares, gold, diamond, real estate, Cash a/c in bank - none of these major investment avenues have any real intrinsic value. All are perceived values. Don't you think?

Some one had posted a closed economy story here CD. I can't find the link, but it was like A lending money to B, who uses it to by C's land at a premium etc. Hope you get the concept.

Money will come and go... Make the best of it, when you can.

Yes, that I agree totally. One's debt is one's responsibility. Not some one else's.

I am not sure if this is what you're talking about (the source dates back to 2005):

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2005/09/14/canada_poverty20050914.html

However, this link suggests the opposite what you mentioned above, i.e. socialistic vs. capitalistic set up. But I agree with you completely.

This is a recent one (Oct 21, 2008). http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20081021/income_gap_081021/20081021?hub=TopStories

His (Dr.Lxxxa in 101.3) comments may be based on this part...

================
The study also notes that "if Canadians do fall into poverty ... they are likely to remain poor for longer than in most (developed) countries."

However, although poverty rates are high, fewer Canadian households than in other countries struggle to purchase basic goods and to have decent housing and other living conditions.
