Maverick,

Open an account in any of the International Banks in India...HSBC, CITIBANK etc and based on that reference you can open a bank account in any of their branch in Canada while you are in India.

This way, you can transfer some money and come to Canada relaxed...no tension of carrying cash or Travellers cheque.......

Once you reach Canada, request the bank for ATM Card.

Hi,

in my opinion, it will not help. However, I recently helped one of the new immigrants, who came from Pakistan, and started working within first 2 weeks, to get an unsecured CIBC VISA card. He applied for the card as soon as he recd his SIN, by then he had already found a job, although we did open a GIC (FD in INDIA), to get him a secured card, but his application was approved, so the GICs (flexible) can be redeemed anytime after 30 days of opening. That was the main reason why I advised him to open flexible GIC. So he is a very happy cust.

Reg advise from our respected fellow members, abt opening a bank acct with HSBC or CITI, I beg to disagree with them, on couple of counts.

1. These banks do not have the kind of branch network that others have.

2. I am not sure abt the second point, but this has been discussed by other fellow members in the earlier posts as well. My sincere suggestion is to check with CHC and find out if a statement of account is suffiecient proof of funds at the port of entry or not. I mean you do not want any prob when the immigration officer asks you to show proof of funds. ONCE AGAIN I AM NOT SURE ABT THIS.

3. One of the very imp points is the service charges these bank assess on your acct. Even the fees for transferring money from a bank acct in India/Dubai/anywhere else to a bank acct in Canada. If you really want to do it that way, my choice would be ICICI bank. Not HSBC, not CITI, none other, but ICICI Bank of India. After coming here, you can once again open an acct with any Canadian bank to enjoy the advantage of branch network. That way you may not have to carry money with you. (subject to clarification of second point)

4. Moreover, I know for sure that Thomas Cook India, will issue you commission free TCs. I do not know abt other banks, but if you open acct with CIBC, you can encash your TCs without any service chgs. Make sure that if you buy TCs, get it in CAD $ not US $, coz otherwise, you will have to pay the exchange conversion fees.

I hope this helps.

:)
