Hi All,

Feeling nice to be on Canadian Desi again............

I have few more problems. I really need advice on this badly.

Present Situation:
============
[1] I became Canadian PR in Jan 2007 and My wife became PR in Apr 2007

[2] In Oct 2007 we moved to USA on H1 Visa.

[3] My wife got pregnent

Problem :
=======
[1] I did job in Canada for nine months Where I did not have any medical
insurance.

[2] Which country is least expensive for Cesarean Birth ?

[3] Canadian PR having free medical ----Do I have to pay anything for
cesarean Birth ?

[4] USA medical insurance is too expensive and even after paying so high
insurance we need to copay 20% and if the amount goes above specific
limits we have to pay all exceeded amount.

[5] My employer has not covered my family so I must pay insurance for my
wife under group policy.

I am badly looking for help on this ......

Thank you all in advance......

If you still are a legal Canadian PR living in Canada, or start living in Canada (resume your cdn residency), you will not pay a single penny for your wife's delivery - irrespective of whether it is a C-section or not. There will be a waiting period immediately after resuming your residency (to get the free health coverage) in certain provinces (e.g. Ontario)

Thanks dear Cdn_dude once again for helping in this case too.... You know the complications I am going through.

I have just entered USA in OCT 2007. And I havent left my PR and OHIP health card yet.

Since Its been a month I am in USA , if My wife returns to Canada in Feb End before May (Delivery Date) and starts living there.

Would I secure delivery expenses by OHIP ?

Do they track my presence in CANADA except checking PASSPORT ?
Thats the only way they know that my wife lives outside for around 5 months and enter canada before a month of Delivery Date.

See this webiste: http://www.health.gov.on.ca/english/public/program/ohip/ohip_mn.html

According to this site, you are eligible for the OHIP if you live in Ontario for 153 days in any 12 month period. Therefore, your wife should come back to Ontario before her 153 days outside of Ontario get over and continue living in ON for rest of the time until she completes 12 months from the date of departure from Canada. This way she will comply with the OHIP rules.

I do not know what exactly they check for. But since checking travel record is the most obvious and the easiest way to check on you/your wife, they would do that - this is my best guess. The best way is to comply with the laws and you will have no worries.

Besides, the hospitalization that your wife will have to undergo while giving birth, she will also have to get regular checkups with a gynaecologist throughout her pregnancy and also be subject to 2-3 ultrasound exams to check the health of the foetus.

How will you arrange for medical care to ensure that the pregnancy goes smoothly, if she does not have OHIP coverage?

Also, how did you determine that your wife will have to undergo caesarian?

Finally, if your wife goes into labour prematurely (before OHIP coverage kicks in) what will you do?

There are too many uncertainties in your case and ideally, your wife should return to Canada IMMEDIATELY and start medical care over here. Do not assume that the only time she will need medical care is when she delivers.

Hi Freakoutguy....

Thanks for throwing lights on possibilites.................I need your help to understand few more things.

I need some more information and question in Brackets under your explanation.

How will you arrange for medical care to ensure that the pregnancy goes smoothly, if she does not have OHIP coverage?

[ Are OHIP Coverage and Health card different ? I mean dont they cover free medication for PR. ]

Also, how did you determine that your wife will have to undergo caesarian?

[ First pregnancy resulted in Cesarean .. So I want to get ready for worst case]

Finally, if your wife goes into labour prematurely (before OHIP coverage kicks in) what will you do?

[ I and my family all have Health Cards since last 6 months. So my wife's OHIP coverge is on if i m not misunderstaing ]

Thanks for sharing information and invaluable reply.....

Health card means having OHIP - the health insurance. The bills for buying the medicines from the pharmacy are not covered by OHIP. OHIP covers all types (excluding the cosmetic types) of doctor's visits only.

The OHIP coverage does not depend on "since how long you had the OHIP card" but it depends on the number of days you were a resident (residing physically) in Ontario. Read my previous post and the link in it.
