I live in Ottawa and its a great place to live as compared to Toronto or Montreal.
If you speak French then you can move to Montreal but the tax bracket in Quebec/Montreal is high when you compare with Ontario.
I lived in Montreal for 4 months and I did not like living there and moved to Ottawa.
Its been 3 months and I am loving this place, I loved this place so much that I even purchased a new house and I should get my house sometime in October.
This is a good link where you can go and look for developer who are building new homes in the area. Minto developments are great!. Route 417 is a major road that connects Kanata-Ottawa downtown-Montreal

I have also lived in Toronto, It is also a great place to live but for me I felt that its too crowded.
This is my experience for past 8 months.
As far as housing price, Toronto house price are very high, when you compare it with Ottawa and Montreal is not a place for me.

In Montreal not knowing French can be a big drawback to getting a job, although that may be easier in certain fields than others.
Keep in mind that while Toronto is more costly, it also offers far more job opportunities. You will have to balance these factors when looking at a place to settle down.
As a city Montreal is beautiful, with a European touch to it.
