The Toronto Tabla Ensemble and Jeff Martin (formerly of The Tea Party) will be in concert together at the Glenn Gould Studio, November 24 and 24, 2006, at 8 PM. Tickets are $40 / $35 (student/senior/CADA) and can be reserved by calling the Glenn Gould box office at 416-205-5555.
Since 1991, Toronto Tabla Ensemble artistic director Ritesh Das has used the tabla drum's dynamic musical character as a platform for making music that is accessible to all. Kathak dancer and TTE member, Joanna de Souza will also interpret parts of the musical evening through dance.
As songwriter, singer, producer and guitarist with the Tea Party, Jeff Martin has sought to buck the trend of dumbing down the music for quick commercial gratification. Instead, he continues to follow his inner voice, which speaks to him of the importance of melody, dynamics, musicianship and the manipulation of light and shade.
With his debut solo album Exile And The Kingdom featuring Ritesh Das, it’s time to move forward. Jeff explains, “After the successful tour of Australia in September that was the collaboration of myself and the Toronto Tabla Ensemble, Ritesh Das (T.T.E. leader) and I realized we were on a path that we wanted to continue. We have the opportunity to push the experience further in these shows. We're both very excited about the musical possibilities of these evenings, of recapturing the magic we experienced Down Under, and presenting them to Canadian audiences".
Both the TTE's and Martin's music has endeared itself to a rabid fan base on the strengths of their rich palettes of color and sheer adventurous scopes.
