Calgary, Alberta and North
This is being discussed at some forums ( they are discussing stocks and shares)on internet. Also As per report people are getting good paying jobs in Alberta. I am quoting for everybody's reference and action!
It was stated that:
//Living in Alberta and seeing 1st hand the workforce shortages here, it is my belief that UTS & Petrocan will in the very near future, start scheduling construction projects on the site, or they will not meet their start-up dates.
There was an article in our local paper a while back which quoted an Oilsands Project Engineer who stated that the biggest headache he has is scheduling contactors. It appears you can't get anything expidited in Ft. Mac these days as there are not enough bodies around to complete the work.//
Some of my friends are getting settled in Alberta. Though it is cold

Das - FX, that's a great suggestion.
Provinces like Alberta are debt-free. Cost of living is comparatively less than cities like Toronto & Vancouver. Work opportunities are also more due to the oil boom. Economy is good. There is no provincial tax on products. Since they are smaller cities, travelling time is also less. Major cities in Alberta are Edmonton, Calgary, Fort Mcmurray (major oil reserves), etc.
Infact there are many people who are moving from cities like Toronto, Ottawa precisely for this reason. Negative factors are :
1. Extreme cold in winter.
2. Health care premium has to be paid every month. e.g. for myself, my wife & my 2 kids aged 7 & 3, I pay $88 every month.
Thanks.

Desertsstorm
I have worked in Regina and have now moved to Edmonton on transfer, I feel new comers should look at following cities
1.Edmonton
2.Calgary
3.Fort McMurray
One will get used to harsh weather conditions.
Major disadvantge is auto insurance, which is high for new comers, but in recent year this has dropped considerably
4.Regina
5.Saskatoon
One should move to these places if one has a Job offer or if one is looking to study
Major advantage is Auto Insurance is least, depends on the car you buy, not on the age or experience of the driver
No monthly fee for medical insurance and lot of Indian doctors
6.Winnipeg
same reason as above
What are the prospects for starting or rather buying off a small business in one of these places. By a small business i mean a business like a corner store or a laundry or a small UPS or similar business.
Desertstorm,
No, I am not in the oil industry.
I am in computer sales.
Thanks.

Let's make India a better place !
Bitter cold in Alberta - well yes, but once it drops below -10 how does it matter? It's too cold anyway....and we have health tax in Ontario too....my only reason for hesitating to move to Alberta is that everything seems to revolve around oil, and what happens one day when the oil industry goes into a downturn? Is there something else to prop up the fortunes of the province?

Hi everyone,
With the rising house prices in the major cities, moving to smaller cities will make better sense for the someone looking for affordabilty.
But are there enough jobs in smaller towns? Not many, in my opinion. We will continue to commute to major centres for work, this has become the way of life. Read my article if you are thinking to move in the GTA:
