well i have the same story...planning to land in toronto as of now in summer and the agent asked me half the price that u've mentioned ($500...i s'ppose CDN) for getting a place to live in for a month which could later be extended. Helping to open bank accounts and filling applications and reaching these offices.
i have read all the replies in the thread, all i wish to know is, does it become easy to have an agent if we can afford paying him $500 or is it really a useless decision to have one???

Its really useless and a waste of money to go through an agent when you can yourself get these things free. Probably the only thing you will need to learn will be the addresses where you need to go to apply for SIN, Health care etc - and navigating the public transport system to get to that address.
thanx CDs i value all your posts and though am pro to the thot of avoid spending $500. as i am of the opinion that everyone who is immigrating has had some basic standing in life and is intelligent enough to review a bit and find offices etc to apply for SIN and PR health cards etc. The issue though gets stuck on finding accomodation, i've checked the classifieds for example on this site, then as been guided i've checked through sunnynewcomer.com too.
But what i importantly seek an asnwer to is...is it possible to rent a place (within our budget) from india itself if we have decided to relocate from india to tornoto, at North York or Brampton for instance for the initial 2 to 3 months?? i mean rather than struggling after coming there, cant we rent up a place from here itself? is it a feasible thought?
Please post your comments on this.....

thanx S_S, its nice to know someone who has gone thru the experience of sunny newcomer, how did you manage loacting for something to rent after landing? Can we rent an appartment from India itself...so that we're bound to have a place to live when we land...... (i) is it a wise decision?
(ii) and do landlords give appts on rent like this?
I seek your advice CDs......

I dont think you can rent a home from India itself. so good idea is to stay in sunny and then look around. The sunny proprieter Jenny is also a landed immigrant so she guides you well.
