To apply for citizenship, I understand that :

I must have been physically present in Canada as a permanent resident for at least:

a) 1,460 days during the six years right before the date you sign your application
b) 183 days during each of four calendar years that are fully or partially within the six years right before the date I apply.

I first visited Canada as PR in Oct 2011 for landing purposes only. Later in Aug 2013 I permanently moved to Canada on PR and have been here since then.

I was employed by a Canadian company in 2015 during which I was required to travel outside Canada for official purposes. Thus I was outside Canada for 249 days in 2015.

I have been in Canada for more than 183 days in each year from 2014, except in the year 2015.

Can the 249 days I spent outside Canada in 2015 while on employment with a Canadian company be considered towards the physical presence requirement when applying for citizenship.

If not, when do I become eligible to apply for citizenship.

Thanks in advance.

What's the hurry for Citizenship ?

These days Canadian citizenship is more of a liability than anything else.

You will need a VISA to go to India. Plus taxation issues both in India and Canada.

Unless you are going to use the Cad Passport to travel the world, Cad citizenship is pretty useless. More of a hassle and burden.

India doesn't allow dual citizenship. You will lose your Indian citizenship and Indian passport.

Thanks for the response.

I am aware that India doesn't allow dual citizenship and I will lose my Indian citizenship and Indian passport. However I will apply for OCI.

But my doubt is.... can the 249 days I spent outside Canada in 2015 while on employment with a Canadian company be considered towards the physical presence requirement when applying for citizenship.

If not, when do I become eligible to apply for citizenship.

No it (249 days ) won't count towards your citizenship days. Only if you were employed by the Federal Government, Provincial Government and Canadian armed forces and stationed abroad those 249 days will count towards your citizenship. In general anything to do with Gov. related work or Gov. agencies it will count, otherwise NO.

If its a regular private Canadian company or business, who sent you abroad for work it won't count towards your citizenship.

However those days do count towards maintaining your PR status. Even to maintain your PR, you have to reside certain number of days in Canada, otherwise even that PR status expires.

For PR status they are a bit more lenient, but for Citizenship days they are more strict.

As far as when you will be eligible ? You will only be eligible , when you fulfill the following condition, otherwise you will waste $ 500 + application fee. So see if you have 1,460 days or not.

" You must have been physically present in Canada as a permanent resident for at least 1,460 days during the six years immediately before the date of your application. You must also be physically present for at least 183 days during each of four calendar years that are fully or partially within the six years immediately before the date of application. "

USE this official Canadian Government, Physical residence calculator below to see if and when you will be eligible for Canadian Citizenship :

https://eservices.cic.gc.ca/rescalc/startBasicCalc.do

https://eservices.cic.gc.ca/rescalc/resCalcStartNew.do

Based on the dates and information you provide . Make sure you enter them accurately and the decription

The calculator will either tell you you are eligible and fulfilled all the conditions for Citizenship or it will give you the following message telling you when you will be eligible :

" There are fewer than 1,460 days between when you became a permanent resident and when you plan to apply for citizenship. According to the information you provided, you will be a permanent resident for at least 1,460 days on XXXX-YY-ZZ "

XXXX-YY-ZZ being the date when you are eligible.
