I had brought my steam iron almost 10 years back and it is still working.

I am however thinking of replacing it , hoping that a good one might ease the effort a bit.

These 4 are the ones I have shortlisted . (2 from Walmart & 2 from Costco ) .

Please advise what should the order of sequence .. I am placing as per what I determine them to be ... it could be wrong.

a. Panasonic1500w multi directional cordless ($90/- , currently discounting for $70/- from Costco.
http://www.costco.ca/Panasonic-360%C2%B0-Quick-multi-Directional-Cordless-Iron.product.100206131.html

b. T-Fal Ultraguide 1600w ($50/- from Walmart)
http://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/t-fal-ultraglide-diffusion-iron/6000042285306

c. Panasonic 1400w Stainless Steel sole plate ($50/- from Costco)
http://www.costco.ca/Panasonic-Wattage-Stainless-Steel-Soleplate-Iron.product.100206127.html

d. Panasonic 1200w U Shape ($40/- from Walmart)
http://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/panasonic-u-shape-nie655tr-steamdry-iron/6000029026163

Since I expect using this for next 10 years , I do not wish to compromise . Please advise and feel free to recommend any other good quality iron .

Fido,
Would you mind explaining why you use steam iron instead of a regular iron?

By steam Iron, do you mean ironing your cloths from the hanger in the ward robe itself or is it an Iron which can be filled with water and this water converts into steam when ironing on the ironing board.

BPF~ Sir ironing is the damnest chore I hate doing and though I have a perfectly well working iron , I am looking @ a higher segment one , hoping it might reduce my rigor :) ...

TK ~ Steam iron (sorry I guess that's a basic feature here ) - but my nomenclature comes from India where you get non steam iron also .... No I don't need to vertically steam clothes , just the regular pressing on iron board ... the one which can be water filled to convert to steam.

Have researched somewhat and found that the Panasonic cordless one ($90) is not worth the cordless feature as you have to replace it in a dock every now and then to maintain its heat ... It is out for me ...

I am now leaning towards the T-Fal one ($50/- from Walmart ) ...The only -ve I have read about this and I would check that out is that the handle posture / ergonomics is kind of sloping down so prolonged use may give wrist pain ...

Has anyone used T-Fal iron ?

I used to work at Phillips Domestic appliances in Singapore where the steam irons are manufactured for the world market. With the kind of quality in place, I can confidently recommend to go with Phillips.

There are several things that go in the iron. The plate coating and the temperature switching from set value are the main. If you go with 2000W, the time for ironing will be quicker and your clothes will be better wrinkle free. It is like driving a 800 cc Maruthi at 100 kms compared to a v6 AWD. Both will do the job with different comfort levels. Any thing below 1500W is actually not so good. You may not believe kind of fire hazards without auto shut off feature. For $100, you certainly get a good one. For 10 years, it is about 1$ / month which certainly is a good investment.

Ironing is part of one’s daily life style and should be given more consideration than the helicopter. Don’t go by the cost but consider the value it adds. There is nothing compared to the good feeling of being properly dressed, I guess.

Here's my experience:

1. Cordless irons are more theory than practicals. Yes, you have to put it on the dock frequently and that defeats the purpose
2. TFAL - I have a similar model which I bought from Costco a few years ago (on sale for around $38). The non-stick plate and ultra glide feature loose their charm after the honey-moon period. In about 4 years I'm ready to replace the (steam) iron
3. I've been researching about irons with stainless steel plates. I used one recently, and seems to be good, but mind you only about 10 minutes of using it. So I need to do some more research.
4. Almost all irons these days come with the 3-way auto shut-off feature, which I really like

GKT & SS ,

Thanks for your comments and advice and concurring that irons are an important part of daily life which should not be overlooked ... its utility value is great.

I was actually looking into buying this Black & Decker continuous steam , stainless steel sole plate 1600w for $50/- from Walmart .

It appears to have everything I want - 1600w , stainless steel sole plate , continuous steam .... wonder why 9 reviewers have given it a single star only ... which made me back up and research slightly more.

GKT ~ I also view Philips as a reputable brand but did not see any irons from Philips here .. perhaps they market it less in Canada.

SS ~ Thanks for sharing your T-Fal experience .... Did you find the handle and the iron ergonomically difficult ?
