any other inputs w.r.t. cars .. am wondering if i should just sell my car... the insurance costs are ridiculous...... correct me if i am wrong...$3000-3500 for a year?

can anyone approx. the total car import charges..

registrar fees - $182
modifications for daytime lights - $150 ...

i have a mazda 2000 protege... what other expenses should i account for??

Drive it yourself - do not mess with a moving company for transporting your car.
If you do, make sure they are part of the US Certified Movers Association at moving.org

Depends on where you live.
Anywhere in Toronto/GTA, you are probably looking at higher rates than that - even if you are able to carry over your driving record and other discounts from the US.
I won't suggest that you sell your car simply because you will lose money two ways - selling a 2000 model year car, you have already eaten all the depreciation on it and selling it now you will lose a lot of money.
Secondly, buying a car in Canada the moment you land will also cost you more money.
Simply eat the cost of importing your car at this time.

Usually a child restraint hook worth $7.
I don't think there are any other fees per se, however, once you go for the inspection, they will tell you whether you need anything else or not.
Like in my case, I needed new tires which was extra expense for me.

After the inspection, you will have to pay for your driving license ($50) and registering your car ($100 or more depending on the car type).

I can't think of any other cost.

Hope this helps.

go to http://www.riv.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK for details on importing cars,
you have to pay custom duty if your car was not made in N.America
I got my car from the US.

The porcess is a bit lengthy, but simple

GOOD LUCK !

I plan to drive my car from U.S. to Canada too. However, my tires are already due for a change. Especially, for such a long drive, I should get them changed. My question would be:
What kind of tires should I get in U.S. so that when I reach Canada, I don't have to spend once again on tires, OR Would it make no difference whatsoever, and I would still have to get the tires replaced again at the time of import?
Any advice?

Hi,

I posed the same question to a Canadian Tire sales associate who incidentally was a desi. This is what he suggested, He says the winter conditions here in Canada are much more severe than in the US ( unless you are from Alaska), like more days where there is black ice on the road, accumulated sleet due to more constant snowing, Comparatively lesser reduced visibility etc etc. What he suggested that ALL SEASON tires dont help, so consider getting your car with the tires that it has standard. Based on the inspection and depending on the time you arrive invest/spend either on Winter Tires or Radials or whatever.
