In India, according to the survey, 85% of parents spend more than half of their take-home pay on their children's education, extra coaching and extra-curricular activities, placing significant burden on their family budget.
........ parents will keep aside an average budget of over Rs. 2 Lakhs to 4 Lakhs before the primary schools begins due to the heavy fee charged by the private schools, a survey conducted by industry body ASSOCHAM said.

BS.
May be you are talking about international schools / residentials schools.
People close to me pay around Rs. 500 a month for play school and Rs. 1000 a month on fees for grade 2.
In best schools this may be Rs. 2000 a month and Rs. 5000 a month respectively for very high quality of educations.
Esp. in Tamil nadu, schools are plenty and cost of education is down. Bus fees for the whole month is in the range of Rs.400 to Rs 800 (18 $ to 36$).
Hope you are aware that salaries have gone up. EVen a local labourer gers Rs. 400 at the min. for a day's work (unskilled)

True... educations costs have gone up overall. Branding and commoditation of education is happening at a rapid pace in metros and... cosmos are following. Donations are demanded and the schools are run by charitable trusts.
I guess the true meanings for "Donation" and "Charity" cannot be applied here...
The thoughts of giving children a good education, admission to good schools, interviews and scrutiny by schools, high donation, no strings-no admission etc were so dreadful that I ejected out of that rotten system much before having even a kid !
This reminds me of movie '3 Idiots' that everybody wants their children to be an engineer or doctor. No one thinks about the their interest or talent. Children's schedule is so tight they do not have enough time to think about what they studied/performed. During my last visit I found many kids are so busy for school, private tuition classes, dance classes, karate classes etc.etc. There is too much burden on the shoulders of poor kids. Parents spend so much money and time for children. I doubt that whether they are going to make return on their investments of time and money or not.
Moreover, the situation is now terrible with the advent of private schools who, on the name excellence, looting money from poor parents. I think the overall costing(from KG to university) is even more than the amount spent for university study in Canada.
Alas !! I wonder how those days were when the kids had to learn only one subject?
