A well-made movie that falls short of becoming a master-piece mainly because of a confused and hasty ending.

Although the direction is by Abhishek Chaubey, it carries an unmistakable Vishal Bhardwaj stamp (He is credited with screenplay, dialogues and music). The movie is very down-to-earth - no flashy locations, no designer clothes. It takes place in some northern Indian town near Nepal. Naseer and Arshad Warsi is a pair of "Mama-Bhanja" fleeing from clutches of Naseer's evil brother-in-law, to whom Naseer owns a considerable debt. They take refuge in a widow's (Vidya Balan) house. All three then hatch up a get-quick-rich scheme of kidnapping a wealthy person in Gorakhpur. How the plan is executed makes up the rest of the movie.

For Naseer, the role is a piece of cake - there is nothing left for him that he cannot do. However, I was impressed by Arshad Warsi. IMO, the movie has very faint shades of "Pulp Fiction" and "Reservoir Dogs".

The best part of the movie are the dialogues and some clever and witty one-liners. The language that characters speak is "dehati" Hindi. There are no "feel good" characters or moments in movie. The movie does not preach nor does it takes any moral stance. Each character is evil to his/her core. There are only three songs. The music is quite hummable and the lyrics are top-notch (Gulzar).

Watch the movie if you want to see some intelligent film making. It is not a family movie. Don't go expecting "3 idiots". See the movie if you consider movie an art instead of timepass.

Way to go this Combo ( RGV & Big B ) - except RGV ki Aag

Good review, meghal. I agree with most of your points. The film started with a bang and the first half is really good while the characters are being established. The second half is a bit of a drag. But overall, its a well made film and recommended if you are looking to savour something beyond the routine Bollywood fare.
