Hi Friends,

My family and I are planning to Drive from Toronto to Calgary and back during July..
I wonder if any CD can share his experience and provide any guidelines.

Also which is the best route via U.S.A or Thunder bay.

I am interested in seeing the countrysite of canada on my way and plan to stay in Hotels for 3 seperate nights on the Route.

Which are the best places to stay.

Thanks in advance,

Although I have never driven to Toronto from the West, you are looking at:
19 hours drive between Toronto and Winnipeg Via Highway 1 (Thunder Bay) and then another 22 hours between Winnipeg to Calgary.

If you have not driven the route before, its faster and easier because its straight. There are no fancy rest stops (like in the US).

I am more familiar with the wpg - Calgary route.

if you can manage 19 hours straight stay in winnipeg otherwise you will reach Thunder Bay in about 14 hours. YOu may wish to stay there. We used to drive straight non stop from wpg to calgary - its a long straight (boring sometimes) road, so have good cruise control and make sure you have enough entertainment to keep from falling asleep (you get highway hypnosis)...

Is highway lit between wpg. to calgary for night drive? How about traffic condition? What is the speed limit? Are there small towns or villages in between? Which gas company serves this road ESSO or Petro and at what distance they are located from each other?
I am also looking at this option. Thanks for any update.

No the highway wont be lit the entire way, just in towns/cities you pass. We've done the night drive before. Speed limit is 110 during the day and 100 at night. There are small towns everywhere.

2 hours west of Winnipeg you will hit the city of Brandon (its a smaller city). I believe it is 6 hours to Regina, Saskatchewan. I dont know the gas companies but there are many of them.

When you get to winnipeg, try to bypass the city and find the 'perimeter highway'. this will take you around the city to the north (or south whichever you prefer) unless you plan to stay in town for the night.
