This is for a grade 10 student who is choosing subjects for the next grade. Eventually student's career direction will depend on the subjects choosen in Grade 11/ 12.

Student would like to go with English, world religion, envoirnmental science, anthropology, psychology, sociology, math functions, dance, travel and tourism.

Some of the career options associated with the above subjects can be easily guessed.

However, with the service economy withering and the North American job markets shrinking, jobs in the service sector may no longer be attractive by the time this student becomes a graduate.

On the contrary, science subjects (:( this student does not want to pursue) can lead to: engg., architecture, agriculture, energy and construction jobs that could offer security and great opportunities in N.America for many years to come.

Hi Amit

I respectfully disagree. Social Science subjects such as english, anthropology, psychology, sociology are very good backgrounds for a variety of careers, scientific or not. Medicine, teaching, nursing, social work, occupational therapy, physical therapy etc. Academic careers.

Science related jobs you have mentioned are not immune from effects of the economy. Construction industry is suffering quite a bit right now.

I'll post later with some links and resources.

See you can tell that I am not an expert in this.

Thanks for your feedback. I will look forward to your links etc. Please offer some suggestions that will lead to University education.

As far as contruction jobs are concerned, soon you will see large scale migration of laid off housing contruction employees into the infrastructure projects (soon to be annouced).

take a look at Canada job futures:

http://www.jobfutures.ca/en/interface-be.shtml

On this site you can search occupations by many different criteria including study areas (alphabetical, area of study, education level and work prospects).

Health care and Gerentology (any work with seniors or services for Seniors) will be in demand in the next decade as the majority of the population is older. Also services for newcomers as Immigration will soon be the only source of population replacement. Etc.

Ontario Job Futures:

http://www.ontariojobfutures.ca/home_page.html

The following link from Ontario job futures talks about demographics and statistics and various factors:

http://www.ontariojobfutures.ca/employment_trends.html

Different areas of Canada will have different occupational demands.

Very helpful information and great resources.

Students can even take "Know Yourself Quiz" to find where their interest/ passion lies. http://www.jobfutures.ca/en/home.shtml

Thanks very much!
