Till you buy your own house and have sufficient income, it is advicable to go for used furniture - it is cheaper and environment friendly.
You can try buy looking up the Classifieds in CD...
If you dont find what you need over there, look up other free classified pages on craigslist, kijiji, buysell.com...etc. You might find good items at even community goodwill stores like Salvation Army, Value Village etc..
Good luck and welcome to Canada!

I think its better to get used furniture first when you migrate to Canada. Once you get your own house or condo then probably its the right time to get new furniture. When you get your own house, you can choose what color & shape furniture would go along with your house & then you can deliver it directly to the new house. Moving the new furniture from the initial rented place to your house is gonna be a pain for you. Its more easy to leave the used furniture there & move on fresh to your own house....
You can check some of the garage sale during weekend around your place for used furniture. Or you can check this websites where you can get all used stuff
http://www.toronto.craigslist.ca/" target="_blank">www.toronto.craigslist.ca/
http://www.toronto.kijiji.ca/" target="_blank">www.toronto.kijiji.ca/
you can search for the stuff you want......
You can even search in the CLASSIFIED section of this website

The new vs used for furniture depends on how much $$ you are setting aside for furniture.
I personally tend to lean towards new furniture rather than used.
New doesn't necessarily mean more expensive.
Sometimes, you can get new furniture for about the same price (or marginally more) than used furniture.
If your budget is limited, stay away from big chain stores like Brick, Leons, Ashleys, etc. although it may be good to visit them and have a look around for quality, styles, sizes, etc.
You can go to discount furniture stores like Nationwide etc.
There are hundreds of discount furniture stores along Dundas, between Hurontario and 427 - there are literally rows and rows of furniture stores.
Sometimes you can get good fabric or even leather furniture for a fraction of the cost of Ashleys or Leons.
Most of these stores are also open to bargaining, esp. if you are buying a lot of furniture.
It's harder to bargain for a discount at stores like Leons or Brick unless you are buying thousands of dollars of goods.
Also, bargain for free delivery.
If you are really on a shoestring budget, then go for used, but be prepared to settle for worn out or marginally damaged items (check for bug or termite damage).
Also, clean any used furniture thoroughly before use.
If you're cool with that, then go for it.

Do not buy a used bed ..... you will use it for 8 hrs every day and these 8 hrs will determine how well your next day goes .
New furniture is expensive here , used is available cheap but getting what you want will need patience .
A middle approach is - buy used initially and then replace it gradually piece by piece upon reading some interesting deals which keep on coming .....
