The "Permit Raj" is not exclusive to India. Canuckistan is equally bad.

To be fair, that "Permit Raj" is only a "feature" of Ontario.
In other provinces you can buy booze like in the US.
For example, our neighbours in Quebec can buy booze in gas stations, convenience stores, etc.
I believe in Alberta it's the same.

It's more expensive than US for sure, but then everything is so why should this be any different.

That's right - 69 cents.
Before the war started.

Pratick,
Which year was this ? Gas at 69 US cents a Gallon (around 3.8 litres) ?
I know that in the year 2000 it was $20 a barral but even then 69 cents a gallon is too low in the USA
and before which war? Vietnam?

Peace

I remember gas being 75 cents a gallon in 1999 in the States.

Not sure what the gas in Canada was at that time, but I'll dare a guess........................90 cents A LITRE?? :D

In any case, there is no point comparing gas prices from that long ago.
I meant the second Iraq war in 2003 - the one started by George W. Bush to oust Saddam Hussein.

The war started in March 03, if I recall correctly.

Until then, gas prices used to range between 69c. - 75c. per gallon in the US.

Of course, it varied significantly by state and area.

For example, prices were higher by more than 20c. in California, New York, etc.
In the south it was a lot cheaper (except Florida).

Even at $1 a gallon, it's way cheaper than what it became in the months after the war.

This table shows the Annual Average Crude Oil Price from 1946 to the present. Prices are adjusted for Inflation to April 2008 prices using the Consumer Price Index (CPI-U) as presented by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Note: Since these are ANNUAL Averages they will not show the absolute peak price and will differ slightly from the Monthly Averages in our Oil Price Data in Chart Form .

Also note that although the monthly peak occurred in December 1979 the annual peak didn't occur until 1980 since the average of all the monthly prices was higher in 1980.

Inflation adjusted prices reached an all-time low in 1998 (lower than the price in 1946)! And now just ten years later we are at the all time high for crude oil (above the 1979-1980 prices) in real inflation adjusted terms.

Prices are based on historical free market (stripper) prices of Illinois Crude as presented by IOGA Link> http://www.ioga.com/Special/crudeoil_Hist.htm
Price controlled prices were lower during the 1970's but resulted in artificially created gas lines and shortages and do not reflect the true free market price.

I lived in NY for a bit and it was 99 cents a gallon. And this was NY, we would drive down to PA and it was around 75 cents there.

Man, those were the days. You could fill up the tank for 12 bucks. My car takes 65 bucks now everytime I go for a refill.....Grrrrr!!!!!!!!!
