I wonder if any one has tried this already.
You can save a bit if you go that route.
You need visa to go to India once you are Canadian citizen. So you have to add the cost of Indian visa too if cost of OCI is the only consideration. Tourist visa to India is C$ 62.00 for 6 months.

That's great. I signed up the online petition. As per current exchange rate we should be paying even less than our American counterparts.
Looks like this has worked!!
e). With effect from 04th February, 2008, payment of the fee of US$ 275/- or C$ 421/- for each applicant (US$ 25/- or C$ 40/- for each PIO card holder). The fee can be paid either in U.S. Dollars or Canadian Dollars only through a Bank Certified cheque / Money Order, made payable to “The Consulate -General of India, Toronto”.

Well, PIO Fees still remain the same C$240 vs US$185 for kids!
Thats great news..
I think it is now better to apply for OCI for kids directly instead of taking the PIO -->OCI route.

So Finally they made the descision..
they even should remove the candian dollors as well..as no one in will pay extra in canadian dollors when every one can pay in USD in exchange of CAD.
