Hello Folks,

I am moving to Canada(Toronto) permanently in less than a week. I plan to get a cellphone as soon as possible.

Based on my research, the following are my findings.
Bell, Rogers, Fido & Telus.
http://www.canadiancontent.net/forums/forum-2.html
http://www.canadiancontent.net/tech/mobile/free_phones.html
http://www.canadiancontent.net/tech/mobile/overall_ratings.html

I hope many of you in Toronto might be using some good cellphone plans. I am looking to get into one soon.

Please suggest some good cellphone carrier and their plans.

Please mention the highlights of the Plan also, it is going to be lot helpful when I talk to the Sales Agent, You guys know how the Sales People talk as if the good plan doesn't exist..

BTW, are the numbers transferable when you switch carrier like in US.

As far handset, I want it to be some Nokia model with Infrared & Bluetooth(about 100+$), nto looking one with Camera ,. If you've been using such
handset, Please recommend one. If its not going to be free from the carrier, I wouldn't mind buying one.

I am going to start my life in Mississauga, a place close to SQUARE 1, if there are any outlets of the carrier nearby, Please refer...

Best Regards,
JRF.

Hi JRF,

As a newcomer, I would suggest go for the FIDO $25 minimum plan. The beauty of this is umlimited incoming call (free), 100 daytime minutes (Mon - fri 7.00 am to 7 pm) and 1000 evening and weekend minutes included in this basic plan. It will also be advisable to add the CallerID and voicemail facility so that you can have callers record message when you cannot answer the phone immediately.

In my opnion this is the cheapest plan available with good benefits. Remember, local calls from any landline are free, so in the event you need to make call locally, you can use any land line or payphone (25 cents) instead of using your cell phone.

Instruments are available free ONLY on 2 or 3 year terms, which is very tricky since you are not sure where you are going to settle ultimately, depending upon the job you land...so initially, it is not a bad idea to go for monthly billing. Though Bell has the maximum area coverage for fixed lines, for wireless, each have their own limitations in coverage.

Also, Bell and Telus have CDMA based system, hence you need to buy the instrument from them only and they dont offer many options in NOKIA. Whiel Rogers and FIDO (same company) offer GSM network where you can use your own cell phone and SIN card from the operator. It would also be good idea if you can brig in your own Tri-band / quad band cell phone from overseas if you are looking to hook up with Rogers/Fido.

Besides the carriers own stores in most malls, you can also buy your phone/service from most electronic retailers as Future Shop, Best Buy, Wireless wave, Circuit City etc..

Hope that helps.

Hiren

You'll find an outlet for each carrier in the Square One mall.

Thanks for citing the FIDO advantage ,

How much do the basic CDMA system cost and do Rogers / TELUS have any comparitive plans ($25 category) ??

Also if we have 2 move b/w GTA , Ottawa and Vancouver which provider is beneficial ??

Regards,

Manasvi.

Couple of moths back I switched from Rogers to FIDO ....I am really happy with thier service and connectivity....$25 with unlimited call + Caller ID and voice message alltogether I am paying about $47 per month(Including Tax + access fees) which is definately one of the cheapest in the country:)
FIDO has tied up with Rogers Network so their network area is also expanding .....plus now I can send SMS to any carrier in India which I couldn't while was with Rogers:)

Hi !
When it comes to service after sales I find Telus was best . They even allowed me to switch over plans w/o penalties . Changed my hardware when it was required .
