GNLA chief to contest Meghalaya polls

Shillong, Jan 20 (IANS) Jailed Garo National Liberation Army's (GNLA) chief Champion R. Sangma will contest the Feb 23 assembly elections in Meghalaya, his lawyer said.

"He (Sangma) will contest the upcoming Meghalaya assembly elections as an Independent candidate either from inside or outside jail," Sangma's legal counsel Sujit Dey said Saturday.

Sangma was arrested July 30 near the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya. He was wanted for killings and extortion in insurgency-ravaged Garo Hills in western Meghalaya.

The Shillong bench of the Gauhati High Court granted bail to Sangma Jan 11 after it found that a charge sheet had not been filed against him.

Sangma, a former deputy superintendent of police, deserted the Meghalaya Police and floated the outlawed GNLA Nov 2009 for a separate Garoland.
