23 held in Poland for organ trafficking

Warsaw, July 6 (IANS) At least 23 people have been arrested in Poland on suspicion of offering their organs for sale, RIA Novosti reported Friday.

"This is the first large-scale operation against the trafficking of organs in Poland," the Polish Press Agency quoted police spokesman Mariusz Sokolowski as saying.

About 80 police departments across the country took part in the operation.

Police found that 250 people were offering organs for sale, mainly kidneys, through internet ads.

Of the people questioned in the case, 23 were charged with suspected organ trafficking, police said.

Police, however, did not say if there was any criminal gang involved.

According to Polish law, publishing of organ sale ads is punishable by one year in prison.
