Holi saw two cops killed, two injured in Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal, March 9 (IANS) On the day of Holi, besides young IPS officer Narendra Kumar, an inspector was killed and another IPS officer and a junior police official were injured in three major incidents of attacks on police in Madhya Pradesh.

On Thursday, Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Narendra Kumar was killed when he tried to act tough against illegal mining mafias in Morena and was deliberately run over by a tractor-trolley.

While that incident hit the national headlines, another IPS officer, Bhind Additional Superintendent of Police Jaidevan A., escaped with injuries in an attack by the liquor mafia when he tried to close liquor shops which had opened on a dry day.

In the third incident, an inspector of police was killed while an assistant sub-inspector was critically injured in an attack by unidentified persons while on patrol in Khairgaon district.

"I had gone with some force to close the open shops but they attacked us. They not only attacked but ransacked the shops too to conspire against us," Jaidevan A., who received minor injuries, told reporters.

In this case, a former Bharatiya Janata Party legislator, Narendra Singh Kushwaha, has been reportedly found involved.

Kushwaha and eight others have been named in a case registered after the attack on the police.

"So far, we have arrested two accused in this connection," Chambal Deputy Inspector General (DIG) D.P. Gupta told IANS Friday.

However, police are yet to arrest Kushwaha.

In Khargaon district, an inspector and an assistant sub-inspector were attacked by unidentified persons when they were doing patrolling. In the incident, inspector Raghuram Prasad was killed, while assistant sub-inspector R.B. Goyal was critically injured.

"My father has a head injury and his condition is critical," said Anil Goyal, son of the ASI.

"We have registered a case under section 302 against unknown people and are hunting for the attackers," the Khargaon additional superintendent of police told reporters.
