What is a Social Insurance Number (SIN)?

TheSocial Insurance Number (SIN) was introduced in 1964 as a file identifier for Unemployment Insurance and the Canada Pension Plan. Over the years, a number of other federal government programs, such as Income Tax, have also begun to use the SIN.
