I copied some Word and Excel files to my pen drive (memory stick). When checked, the file Type is showing as Shortcut. I can see the filenames such as .docx etc. but cant figure out what is the meaning of Shortcut. When I open the file, it works fine.
Any suggestions?
Your pen drive seems to be infected with virus. See if you can format the drive and then copy files to it without the shortcuts.
Kaspersky anti-virus software does a good job in disinfecting the drive.
Here's some more info on this issue:

May be only shortcut got copied. You will know that if you use the flash drive in different laptop/pc and try to open the file.
Other way to know is look into the properties of file - if it shows 'target type' and have target path instead of 'type of file' in the property dialog window, it is clear it is indeed a shortcut.
