Not sure if you're aware of this already, but your best bet would be to join the forum at http://www.javaranch.com" rel="nofollow">LINK, if you haven't already. You will find tons of useful information and members to help you out and interact with.

Also, try reading the "Head First Java" book. I have read a couple of their "Head First" series. Excellent reference. One of the authors (Kathy Sierra) is incidentally a moderator of the javaranch forum.
