Does anyone know what the effects of a minor speeding ticket are (15 kph over on a city street)?
Does it incur points?
Does it affect insurance rates?
And how long does it stay on the driving record? 3 years or the full 7 years?
At 15 over you won’t get any demerit points.
Whether your insurance premium increases after your first ticket will likely depend on your insurance provider. I had a ticket for 40 over about 18 months ago, and it didn’t increase my premium. I’ve also tried keying my particulars onto online quote providers like Kanetix, and find that the first ‘minor’ ticket does not lead to an increased insurance premium.
Always contest your ticket. If the cop doesn’t show up, you get away. Even if the cop shows up, you could always have the fine reduced. Besides, in the time that it takes for the case to come up to a hearing, you could have an insurance renewal without the conviction on your record.
For minor tickets, my understanding is that insurance companies look at your record in the past 3 years.
HTH.

Speeding stays three years.
